Hypotension is characterized as its name indicates a low voltage. It speaks of hypotension when the systolic pressure is below 100 mm Hg (= 10 cm mercury) instead of 120 to 140mm of mercury for a normal voltage.
There is rarely a serious illness and hypotension can sometimes be beneficial to the cardiovascular system because the heart is less “tired” in cases of hypertension, for example.
However in rare cases of hypotension can be a symptom of a disease or serious condition as a state of shock or heart attack. Danc these cases it is a medical emergency.
Orthostatic hypotension
A common type of hypotension is orthostatic hypotension, hypotension that occurs when one passes quickly from a sitting to standing
The main causes of hypotension, although not yet fully known, may be:
> a dehydration (resulting from diarrhea or gastroenteritis for example)
> A predisposition (genetic) to have a low voltage. Note: in this case it is not a point always negative (for positive effect on the cardiovascular system)
> Serious injuries, internal bleeding, allergy, a snakebite, heart … we speak in these cases of acute hypotension and it is a medical emergency.
> Pregnancy
> Problems with the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism)
> Liver problems
